Abstract As high-entropy alloys receive an increasing amount of attention, interesting scientific question arises: can grain boundaries be “high entropy”? In 2016, we proposed “high-entropy boundaries” as the boundary counterparts to materials. Here, discuss underlying interfacial thermodynamics elaborate relevant concepts. We emphasize that are neither equivalent in materials nor simply “compositionally complex boundaries”, but they should possess specific thermodynamic characters. Using a simplified segregation model, illustrate both and bulk effects reduce energy with temperature for saturated multicomponent alloys, where effective entropy positive increase number components. show stabilize nanocrystalline at high temperatures via kinetic effects. Grain structural disordering transitions may offer further opportunities attain higher entropies.
